October 6th – October 29th, 2011
Opening Reception: October 6th, 6-9 pm
Friends and Other Strangers is a collection of photographs and motion pictures that examine the relationship between imagery and text in reference to portraiture. First impressions are made based on appearance, and further influenced by short excerpts from conversations and experiences. Despite a lack of context, an understanding of the subject is assumed. This anticipated jump to conclusions is a natural reaction; at the same time, it is indicative of the limitations of visual mediums in the representation of people.
Michelle Louise Wilson is a photo-based artist who currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada. Interested in human behaviour, her work examines issues of representation in portraiture. Michelle completed her B.F.A. in Photography at Ryerson University’s School of Image Arts. She directed production of the I.M.A.Gallery OBSCURA Portfolio, and has exhibited work in various venues around Toronto, including The Gladstone Hotel, Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts and I.M.A. Gallery.
